Gabrielle Union and BET Reach Settlement in 'Being Mary Jane' Lawsuit

Looks like Gabrielle Union can look forwarded to Being Mary Jane for a little bit longer.

The 44-year-old actress and BET have reached a settlement in Union’s multimillion-dollar breach of contract lawsuit against the network, according to Deadline.

“BET Networks is pleased to announce that they have reached an amicable agreement with Gabrielle Union and look forward to sharing the new season of Being Mary Jane with its loyal fans beginning January 10, 2017,” BET said in a statement to the outlet.

Union filed a lawsuit against BET in October for breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation, alleging that the network wanted to shoot 20 episodes of the series back-to-back, against the 13 episodes per season that she claimed they had previously agreed upon. The star also claimed that the network was attempting to “fraudulently extend the term” of her contact.

Season one of Being Mary Jane included eight episodes, season two had 12 episodes, and season three had 10 episodes. While season four of the series began filming in September 2016, Union’s complaint stated that she was informed a week before principal photography began that BET intended to make season four a 20-episode season.

According to the lawsuit, Union, who was set to receive $ 150,000 per episode of season four, and $ 165,000 per episode of season five, sought at least $ 3 million in general damages and a declaration that BET could not order more than 13 episodes for any season of Being Mary Jane.

ET caught up with Union last month, where she opened up about why equal pay is so important in the entertainment industry.

“Equal pay. Equal work. That’s how it should be. Yeah, and if you stand up for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.”
